Molecular and crystal structures of cellulose in severely deteriorated archaeological wood

Abstract Preservation and conservation of archaeological wooden artifacts is extremely challenging due to a lack knowledge about the hierarchical structure preserved cellulose. Herein we report on comparative analysis eight four recent wood samples from three sites in China by variety methods, including micro-morphology, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrum, X-ray scattering, chromatographic sugars, solid state 13 C CP/MAS NMR. Results show that deterioration microscale clearly related fragmentation both cellulose crystallite microfibrils. Slightly deteriorated features crystallites microfibrils, comparable non-degraded wood, whereas severely shows higher porosity cell wall, fragmented aggregates instead fibrils nearly no crystallinity. Alterations molecular structures resulted advanced degradation amorphous crystalline domains. Only small amount was preserved. The data allows assume highly but still partially lamellas.
